Testing the effectiveness of physical activity advice delivered via text messaging vs. human phone advisors in a Latino population: The On The Move randomized controlled trial design and methods

Summary

This study was designed to compare the effectiveness of a culturally-tailored physical activity program delivered via text messaging, developed with CareMessage, to a traditional human-led phone advising program for Latino adults. A pilot study confirmed the CareMessage program was highly acceptable and effective for this population.

Key Findings

  • A pilot study of the CareMessage text-messaging program found that 100% of messages were delivered successfully.
  • Participants in the pilot gave the program high ratings for helpfulness (5.7/7) and satisfaction (6.4/7), and 88% would recommend it to others.
  • The pilot data showed that all but one participant increased their physical activity over the 6-week program.

Clinical Significance

This research is working to confirm that automated, culturally-tailored text messaging from a platform like CareMessage can be just as effective as more resource-intensive human coaching. The successful pilot study indicates this is a convenient, accessible, and well-liked way to deliver health information and support to Latino adults.
